Full Mailbox

The boys beat me home each day, and I miss out on one of my favorite sights: a mailbox filled with holiday greetings. Yes, they courteously put them on the kitchen counter for me to open, but the thrill of  retrieving them myself is gone - for a few years anyway. Still, the delight I take in reading cards and letters, seeing familiar faces just a bit older and changed, and  imagining the people I love is extreme. It is a great pleasure of life to keep close the people we hold dear through our correspondence. And then there are the weekly letters from my mom that feature some funny story from her past or recent experiences. I do love a full mailbox.

  2. There is indeed a great joy opening the mailbox and finding hand addressed cards. Usually I display my Christmas cards in my apartment so that I can see them every day and be reminded of the senders and all the people who fill my life with love. This year I have not. It's a sad indication that I have let myself get too busy with other things this year.

  3. I agree. Real, tactile cards are so satisfying. Plus there is the knowledge that friends far away are thinking of you. David, We put our cards in a silver bowl we got long ago as a wedding gift. We can riffle through them, but the setup doesn't require any decorating time!

  4. I think I'll take your advice for this year, Joyce, and next year I can display them like I usually do. Thank you for the suggestion!

  5. As you might imagine, Brattcat, the full e-mail inbox does not excite me so much...unless there are notes from people I love.

You must be too busy to give up that joy, David. Like you, Joyce, we keep ours close at hand (in a basket I made).
