Nine Kinds of Pie

We are missing what promises to be an excellent HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON party at our friends' house tonight. They actually have one purple bedroom with magnetic paint on the walls for large Magnetic Poetry words! It features purple line drawings that mimic Harold's/Crockett Johnson's drawings in the book. With themed food and games planned by two thoughtful people, our other friends are sure to still be enchanted when the draw up their covers this evening, drop their purple crayons, and drop off to sleep.

I have reread this classic books several times today with all of them in mind, knowing that I would have been baking pies today to share with them. Probably not nine kinds, as Harold created, but I always like to give choices. Apple, of course, because everyone seems to like that. And a chocolate cream because I have been craving it.

  2. Oh, how I wish you could be joining us tonight! I'm about to head out the door to this Purple Party. I'm not the skilled baker that you are, so my potluck contribution is a dish of purple jello with purple grapes and blackberries, topped with a cutout of Harold in his boat sailing beneath a purple candy slice moon. You will be thought of often tonight, and missed heartily.

  3. Wow, what a party!!!!! Harold is one of my favorite favorites. I used to do drawings lessons with it. _______ (fill in the name) & the Purple Crayon. The kids made their own little books, bound by puprple yarn. I just read Johnson's book Time for Spring (because of searching for my mystery snowman book). Have you seen Andrew Drew & Drew? I thought the author should have given Johnson credit...Nevertheless, great!

    1. I did something similar, Rita, but the kids could choose the color crayon. I have not seen ANDREW DREW AND DREW, but I reserved it from the library. Have you read NOT IN THE HOUSE, NEWTON? It is a wonderful take on drawing objects, and I thought those collaborators should have acknowledged Mr. Johnson.
