Dog Book List

With the upcoming release of Debra Frasier's SPIKE UGLIEST DOG IN THE UNIVERSE, I got the urge to create another book list for readers to use in conjunction with the book. She was thrilled with the idea! Once in my mind, the list became lengthy. Fictional dogs I have loved pawed their way into my thoughts: Bruno from Don Freeman's SKI PUP, Thacher Hurd's ART DOG, the smart speaker MARTHA made famous by Susan Meddaugh, Gene Zion's HARRY THE DIRTY DOG, and so many nameless dogs that have pranced across the pages. The real dogs I have loved also entered the mix, blurring fiction and reality with personalities and names.

So, I am quickly annotating tonight the stack of ten I brought home from school today. Any favorites are welcome additions!

    1. Agreed. I just finished A DOG CALLED HOMELESS and think you might like it.

  2. Do you know Boodil, My Dog? That book cracks me up, & talk about the words not mimicing the text...The Boomer series... A book I especially LOVE is My Big Dog by Janet Stevens! Such humor!
And then, for older, of course there is Creech's Love That Dog...(I snuck that in...)

    1. I don't know Boodil, My Dog, but of course I will reserve it. I, too, love MY BIG DOG! I have not decided (and will let Debra decide) whether or not to include chapter books. I think it might be a good idea.

  3. Perhaps a little crude, but my grandkids and students (when they were doing creative writing) LOVED any of Walter the Farting Dog's books. In fact, I, too found that it appealed to my own juvenile humor!

  4. How about The Stray Dog by Marc Simont? One of my favorites. I also love the book A Day, A Dog, by Garielle Vincent, which is wordless.
